fees and overselling

I just arrived home from Salt Lake City after an amazing snowboard/ski vacation and witnessed a few things, mainly with Delta but I am sure with other airlines too

firstly, fees: it seemed that Delta was charging for everything except for nonalcoholic drinks, granted everyone knows this and its on their website, while first class pass. get 3 free check in bags the majority have to pay $20 for the first and $40-60 for the second which is a pretty unfair practice especially to destinations where many people bring 2 bags (sports equiptment etc)
but the main issue with me with their fees is that you MUST use a credit/debit card, they won't accept cash, its a major airline (biggest in the world) and they wont accept cash, there was a group of 14yr old(ish) that ordered some food and tried to pay with cash and the flight attendant took the food away since none of them had a card

issue #2, overselling
On my way out to SLC from EWR there was an overselling situation by 2 people and they promised to get the passengers there on the next flight with a $400 delta dollars incentive.......well I met up with the guy who didn't make the flight (he boarded the plane and all the seats were taken so he had to leave) and he was telling us that he didn't get on the next flight and had to wait till the next morning because the nxt flight was oversold and the computer system showed he was on the original flight

over dinner, my friend who came over from singapore and his brother who flew in from london (both on delta to SLC) were telling us about how the flights were oversold

lastly, when leaving SLC to EWR we kept hearing announcements that there is a possible overselling situation on flight # to Boston, flight # to denver, flight # to Newark............i counted at least 4 different announcements about possible overselling on flights going to different locations

so with this overselling of flights and charging all these fees, how is it that they are "loosing" money and not making obscene amounts of money and profits?

Because the executives are stripping out any profit in ridiculously high share options and robbing the customers blind. When the airline fails to pay it's obligations, it then shelters under Chapter 11 to rob its customers and suppliers and starts again.

mars, you have been on this board for ages. What you thinking flying on Delta? Are you mad?

Delta is the only nonstop airline from EWR to SLC and i booked my flights after my family friend booked his and it arrived around the same time as my friend and his brother

I knew Delta was bad but i didn't think that they would oversell every flight out of SLC (basically a Delta hub since they took over NW and the majority of planes are Delta)

I don't know how long it's been since you've taken a flight, but Delta is not the only airline that has "cashless cabins" American, Continental, U.S. Airways, United and yes even the beloved Southwest all have a cashless cabin policy.

Delta does accept Cash at the ticket counter for checked bag fees. but then again Southwest is the only of the above listed carriers that doesn't charge these fees.

As far as the overselling, the last time I checked most airlines also oversell their flights as well. perhaps it was just more noticable since spring break is known as a busy travel time in the United States.

the majority of my flights are international on non-US based airlines which dont use fees, i still think that the cashless policy is stupid and that its frustrating, money is money so they should accept it

I would understand the spring break idea but it was literally every single delta flight that was leaving around the same time as my flight that was oversold, and there were very few kids and college students

To be honest, SWA does charge for checked luggage starting with bag #3.
