Continental flew my fishing rods to China instead of Mexico

Took a fishing vacation in a remote area in Mexico. I checked in the fishing rods. When I arrived to Mexico I was told by Continental that the fishing rods missed the plane and will be delivered the next day. Continental did not contact me and toward the end of the week I saw on Continental web site that the rods were delivered. I called the airport and they told me they will not deliver the rods and I can only pick them up at the airport when I leave the country. I drove to the airport in a storm trying to salvage the last day of fishing and I got stuck in the city because of bad weather and I had to spend the night at the hotel. Continental refuses now to reimburse me for the gas and the night at the hotel.

As it turned out, someone at Newark airport loaded the rods on a plane to Shanghai China instead of Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

I am done with this company. The questions I have: Can I sue them and win: 1. The expenses for the car, phone calls and the hotel 2. Lost vacation as the whole purpose of the vacation was for fishing.

U S Federal law prohibits airlines from limiting losses for delayed/mishandled baggage. If you had purchased all new fishing equipment in Mexico they would have been forced to reimburse you. Unfortunately, I believe, they are not required to reimburse you for any inconvenience. You might have a shot in small claims court, however. They will not show up and you will win by default.
