They didn't violate a law. They can leave before their schedules time if they get approval from ATC and dispatch. The airline I work for can leave up to 10 minutes early, if all passengers are there, but need permission from dispatch to leave any earlier than that. It usually takes nothing more than a quick phone call to get that approval, and off they go.
