Actually, Jim, on Delta if you check in online or at a kiosk and the flight you're checking in for is overbooked you will be given the option of an earlier or later flight at no additional cost. It's happened to me before but I usually stick with the overbooked flight and volunteer my seat in exchange for a voucher. Of course we all know those vouchers are worthless and you can never use them anyway!
