pearldesert.......you should have really made a new thread for your complaint rather than tacking it onto an already existing thread.

I won't make too much of a defense for the airline as it sounds like your experience was a bit stressful.

I will say that whether the plane was unsafe per the captain or if he had too many hours that either one of those reasons are perfectly fine for him to refuse to fly. It's a huge inconvenience to alot of people but the alternatives could be worse for you and for him.

As far as the security people, not an airline issue at all. They are employed by the government.

Your grandson, at 17, is not required to show ID. Any airline personnel should have known this and this inicident I find they were at fault. I hope it doesn't deter him from flying again when he needs to. Write a letter to US Air with your complaint about this. Just a very friendly suggestion though, maybe a spellchecker before you send it off would be an ok idea.
