That is scandalous.... Their conduct was utterly outrageous. You had taken all possible measures to address this problem. If you took them to court, I am sure in most jurisdictions you would win. They placed you in a situation in which it was impossible for you to meet their terms and conditions and made no provision to allow for the possibility that someone's card may expire, be stolen etc. It is tantamount to theft.
To rub salt into the wound, how can they say the flight was fully booked? You had a seat booked on that flight... and so it must have been possible for you to re-purchase the seat.
Etihad are behaving like some tin-pot dictator making up rules that are utterly ludicrous and one sided. I am shocked they will behave in this high handed manner and appreciate the heads up. I will never use them... I wish you luck in finding a resolution.
