I feel badly after reading about your experience. You are not being literal when you suggested that Delta should have paid for your hotel and meals, right? I think you were just saying that out of frustration. Of course, if you were driving and the highway was shut down, you’d never expect the maker of your vehicle to pay for your hotel and meals. The airline has no control. As much as I hate airlines, I would never expect that.
However, driving back and forth to the airport is complete nonsense. They should have contacted you when your luggage arrived. I hope you get a response from them, and have much better luck the next time you travel.
