American Airlines Canceled My Return Flight - Seeking Advice on Compensation
Hey everyone,
I'm hoping to get some advice on how to handle a situation with American Airlines. Here’s what happened:
I had booked nonstop flights from JFK to ATH and back:
Outbound Flight:
Date: August 19, 2024
From: JFK at 5:50 PM
To: ATH at 10:25 AM (August 20, 2024)
Return Flight:
Date: September 13, 2024
From: ATH at 12:30 PM
To: JFK at 4:20 PM
Total Cost for 2 People: $1,858.20
American Airlines canceled our nonstop return flight and rebooked us on a one-stop flight. Since this wasn't what we paid for, I canceled and got a full refund.
However, now I’m facing significantly higher costs for booking a new nonstop flight with another airline. For example, the new flight options are over $2,500 for 2 people, which is $650+ more than what we originally paid.
I emailed American Airlines requesting compensation for the difference in cost between the original booking and the new flights. I asked for them to cover this difference to help mitigate the inconvenience and additional expense caused by their cancellation.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any tips on getting them to agree to this compensation? What’s the best way to follow up if I don’t hear back soon?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
