Default AA blackmail

Due to miscommunication in planning our vacation, we purchased 3 round trip tickets from msp to pvr on April 9, 2011, when the date should have been April 2, 2011. After more than several frustating phone calls and finding out the cost of changing our tickets to the prevoius week would cost more than $1000.00, we cancelled the reservations. Only to find out, AA does not reimburse your money, but gives you a credit to use for other flights which can only be booked by the original passengers listed. AA is basically blackmailing us to fly on their airline. They have the original ticket amount we paid of $1570.00 and are not providing any services to us. Its not like its a last minute change, the flight is more than 5 months away. I cant believe airlines are allowed to operate this way. How many companies do you knoe that would still be in business if they operated like this.
