Chris,
Whilst there is some merit in this argument, there are some problems with it. Many passengers do not have the option to "not fly" as there is no other viable alternative. By building up huge "fortress hubs", the airlines creates effective monopolies. If you lived in Charlotte and decided to boycott US Air, you would find your choices in terms of timings and availability to travel anywhere severely restricted.

The exploitation of local monopolies, used by all major airlines, effectively robs the customers of their power. Until the airlines are regulated, this will not change.
