Not allowed to board
We were supposed to fly out on Emirates flight Ek 775 on 29th November 2021 to South Africa. On the 28th November we were informed that our flights were cancelled. We re-booked a flight with Emirates to a different destination and from there an additional flight from Addis to South Africa was paid for. EK 653 and Ek723
Upon check inn in Male - we were informed that because we are south african we were not allowed to board the Emirates EK 653 flight even though we were flying via dubai EK 723 to Addis.
Emirates did not give us warning of this and allowed us to check inn online on all the flights that we were supposed to take. We had our pcr tests, vaccinations and had passed through dubai on the 22nd November 2021. Now all of a sudden we were not allowed as Emirates stopped flying to South Africa.
We were stranded in Male and as we had no alternate accomodation, no food and limited connectivity we were forced to book Qatar Flights to South Africa at a cost of over 2000usd per person.
Upon arrival in Sa 30 November 2021 we heard that emitates decided that flights to South Africa was now open. Within 13 hours of us not being able to board a flight To transit in Dubai and over 4000 usd paid for alternate flights booked we now get news that emirates resume flying to South Africa.
I have contacted emirates only to be told that there is nothing that can be done .Travel insurance shoud be taken. Travel insurance companies say that this incident cannot be covered as flights were cancelled by Supplier and no covet is provided.
We are now out of pocket for over 4000usd with no chance of making alternative plans as we our original and secondary flights were blocked by emirates. Qatar airlines capitalised on this knowledge and charged ridiculous amounts for flights.
