Default Flight arrived late, missed connection, UA didn't pay hotel

I flew round trip from PDX to Washington DC via Chicago on 3/7/07 and 3/9/07.

ORIGINAL SCHEDULE: ACTUAL FLIGHTS

3/7 UA928 PDX (11:16 am) around 1:pm Chicago (5:05 pm) around 8:pm UA624 Chicago (6:05 pm) around 11:pm DC (8.51 pm) around 1:30 am (3/8)

3/9 UA627 DC (5:40 pm) around 8:pm Chicago (6:55 pm) around 9:pm UA321 Chicago (8:20 pm) missed PDX (10:44 pm) stay overnight in Chicago,had to pay hotel on our own!

SUMMARY:

Outbound trip: 4.5 hours late, arrived at hotel around 2:30 am on 3/8. Need to wake up for meeting early in the morning!

Return trip: flew back on 3/10 arriving PDX at around 1:pm, about 14 hours late! To make things worse, when a UA employee tried to switch us to the flight on the following day, we were told that we had to stay in a hotel that night on 3/9 in Chicago on our own! SHE SAID THAT UA WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE HOTEL!!! When I challenged her on this responsibility for their passengers, she said that they just have too many passengers got delayed and therefor justified for not paying them all to stay in hotels waiting for the next flights!

I then asked her a very simple question: "If you're found guilty for killing one person, will it make you innocent just by killing more?"

The UA employee answered me with a VERY STRANGE SMILE!!
