Malaysia Airlines: WORST experience!
On departure from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, my husband and I headed to our seats, only to find a large red 'X' stuck to my seat. This was quite concerning given the current fligth security and we quickly called on flight staff. We were asked to sit in separate seats while they flight attendants contact ground crew to find out what was wrong with the seat. This took about 15 minutes while we were still grounded. While the flight attendant and ground crew staff member debated why flight staff were not informed of the faulty seat, my husband and I were eager just to find a seat together and felt rather uncomfortable infront of other passengers while this was all taking place. Eventually, we were guided to two seats together.
On departure from Kuala Lumpur, about 10 minutes after the flight took off, I noticed a liquid leaking from above (seemed to be leaking from the bag stowage area). As I was seated in the last seat of my section, I looked up to see that the liquid had started to leak from about 3 rows infront of me and was moving quickly to above my row. As the liquid starting leaking from the compartment above our heads, I quickly alerted the flight crew member seated directly behind me. Without even assessing teh matter, he was still seated and was quick to state it was water from the airconditioning unit, which I found hard to believe, since the liquid was a yellowish red colour and smelt like vinegar. Myself and other passengers were questioning the liquid matter, and the woman seated infront of me was complaining that it felt like it was burning as it dripped on her skin and I urged the flight steward to please see where it is coming from and what it was. He got up with a box of tissues in hand and simply started to wipe the liquid matter, without investigating. I continuously asked him what it was and he kept saying he didnt kow, which was clearly distressing to myself and the other passengers seated in those 3 rows. The woman passenger seated infront of us was moved to another seat, although we were still seated in the same area cleaning up the liqiud from above our heads, which began to leak in a steadier flow from above our heads. I asked the steward to please check the above stowage area, incase there was something leaking from a bag. He emptied the area above us, and could not find anything, so it was a mystery as to what was leaking which was even MORE concerning. I was distressed for the rest of the 8 hour flight, since this liquid was not identified. When it became too much to bear the liquid dripping the flight attendants moved me to a seat in the first row of the next section behind me. I was told it was the only seat, and the man in the window seat and the aisle seat were asleep, and slouched over the seat in the centre, so I had to sit forward in my seat for quite some time. I ended up standing for most of the flight and was VERY tired as a result. When I noticed the liquid was no longer dripping for about 3 hours, I was told it was ok to move back to my seat if I wanted, so I moved the blanket which i placed over my seat to prevent it getting wet, and took a seat. Then almost 30 minutes after I was seated there, a water substance started to leak and I felt it dripping down my neck , then in an instant a stronger steadier flow was dripping down and I was desperate to move from my seat. My hair and clothing was now wet, and I was VERY upset by all this. I called the flight steward again and he once again started to wipe the liquid, no apologies, no investigation, nothing at all. I then moved back to the other seat I was assigned, and the two gentleman were now awake after hearing what was going on, so I sat between them. I moved my laptop from the overhead baggage area, as it become damp and I was concerned it was damaged by the unidentified liquid, and I placed it under my seat where I moved to. As soon as I put it there, I noticed the liquid that had dripped fromthe cabin area had leaked onto the floor as well, and there was a thin stream under our feet, so I had to put my shoes on after my socks were soaked, and I could no longer put my laptop on the floor since it became wet at the base of my laptop bag. There was about 2 hours untill landing, and a female flight attendant approached me to confirm my name and apologised saying she is adding this occurance to the report. She then handed me a complementary malaysia airlines vanity pack, to which I did not think was enough compensation for the miserable 8 hour return flight which I had just endured. I am a regular traveller, for both personal and business, and found this to be the worst flight experience to date! I am not happy at all with Malaysia Airlines and it's handling of the above matters. In this day and age with security a major concern for passengers, this was NOT handled in a professional manner at all. Last edited by mochachocolate; Jan 21, 2008 at 2:21 AM. |

What do expect the flight attendant to have done? Your complaint is silly and the airline didn't deserve a worst rating. This could have happened in any airline.

How does my complaint qualify as 'silly' in your opinion? Rather than make a vague comment, it would be nice of you to elaborate. It's quite obvious such an uneducated and vague comment would come from a Malaysia Airlines employee...say no more !

I don't work for any airline. I travel a lot in economy class around the world. I have a Ph.D. and a M.B.A. degree. I only felt that others have suffered a lot more during their travel and your complaint, unless backed by a medical/toxicological expert has no merit. What did you suffer as a result of this unidentified material leaking and what did you expect the flight attendants to do during flight?

In saying that, the origin of the liquid which had leaked from the overhead compartment, was not identified by the flight staff, and a report is currently being undertaken to identify the source. Incase you are not aware of recent occurances on a Qantas flight, there was a leak on board a flight which resulted in the delay and grounding of an airline. Given today's high stance on security, a leak of this kind could have been just about anything. I endured an 8 hr flight standing up for most of it and drenched in a vinegar type substance. Did I need to be burned or affected by the substance in order for me to claim that in my opinion this is one of the worst flights I have been on? No, I don't think so, but to have to wear clothes which were soaked in the off-scented liquid and to have my hair and skin covered in it, is not enjoyable at all. Furthermore, ten minutes before the flight landed in Sydney, I was approached by flight crew who informed me that there was a spare seat at the back of the plane if I wanted to move. Apparently there was a woman who was sleeping for the whole flight stretched out across a 3-seater. Now, to answer your question 'what did you expect the flight attendants to do during flight?', well clearly, if they were doing their job, in the given circumstances, they would have asked the passenger to move to their seat, so i could sit in the spare seat, rather than ask me if I cared to relocate 10 minutes before the flight landed at it's destination. To quote you further 'unless backed by a medical/toxicological expert has no merit' - I find it funny that you require an expert in order for me to post a comment about this occurance, and then decide to write off my comment stating that it has no merit as a result. Are you totally missing the concept behind a forum?? So No, at no point am I claiming to be the forums most affected passenger. I am simply stating a terrible experience that I have personally been through, as do all passengers who post their comment, since these are 'personal' experiences, none of the members who post would expect others that did not go through this to fully understand.
