Default I put my underage daughter on a flight...

Yesterday, Aug 12th, I dropped off my daugter (who is a minor) at Dulles airport for her 4:08 flight to Atlanta. It's over a 2 hour drive for us, but we were confident that everything would be OK. However, the flight ended up being cancelled and the attendant working the Delta gate treated my daughter in the worst way. When my daughter approached the counter and asked what to do next, the attendant told her that it's not her (the attendant's ) problem and that she's (my underage daughter) on her own. What kind of service is that?!! My daughter was in tears and panicing when she called. Of course, at that point, I'm 2 hours away!!!! I called the Delta Customer Service line to attempt to work out an alternate flight, but of course, there was nothing they would do for us...other than book on another day. This was my daughter's first time flying alone and being treated this way is insane. I usually fly for work about 1-2 times per month. I personally will NEVER fly with this piece of sh!t airline again.

What Delta did was wrong. If she was an older teenager, that may have had some bearing on how the CSA perceived your daughter's ability to cope. Obviously, they perceived badly.

When you say underage, just how old?

Was your daughter flying on unaccompanied minor status? Meaning you filled out the paperwork, and paid the fee? If you had, then an employee would have been detailed to escort her and take care of everything.

If she wasn't, and by not paying for UM status, you did pretty much drop her off and leave her to the wolves.

Part of the UM service requires the guardian to stay with the child until the plane has left. Was on the UM program, meaning you paid the fee for this?

Have to agree with the responses, why would you leave your underage daughter at the airport and not wait till the plane left? That sounds like a milk carton photo waiting to happen

I'm sorry but this has fabrication or ignorance of the process written all over it.
Having detailed knowledge of the UNMR process, this doesn't happen to a passenger 14 years or younger. If the parent decides to let their 15 year old travel alone, which is permitted on Delta, then the 15 year old passenger is considered competent to undertake this task. If the passenger is not mature enough to handle unexpected delays, then it is incumbent on the parent to realize that and choose to pay for the UNMR process and protection is provided by Delta. Unfortunately most decide to be frugal instead of proactive. This is the consequence of that decision.

It is a rare event, but I am going to side with the airline on this. My daughter lives in the US and regularly flies to the UK as an unaccompanied minor. I wouldn't trust a dog to Delta, but even when she flies on an airline I trust (most recently Virgin Atlantic), I would NEVER leave the airport until the aircraft has departed. Furthermore, I have enrolled her on Unaccompanied minor programmes for AA, BA, Northwest and Virgin. In each case they have required that I remain at the airport until departure as part of the conditions. Frankly, this is a post which reveals bad parenting... having said that, if the Delta agent treated a younger customer like that.. regardless of whether she was on an unaccompanied minor programme or not, she is a first class b... and clearly has taken the Delta anti-passenger attitude to heart. Welcome to the unfriendly skies.
