Default Luggage Handling

This is the straw that broke the camel's back. Yesterday at JFK airport on my flt from New York to Tampa, after weighing the suitcases, you are told to take your bags to the conveyor belt. The attendands were chatting among themselves, and never offered to carry the bags, that is supposed to their job. Never in my life has seen this type of abuse, specially with senior citizens.
Not only it is bad for the customers, but also make the airport or JetBlue liable in case something happens to the person hauling the suitcases to the belt.
What is happening! This is becoming ridiculous.

The lack of detail about this incident makes it hard to decifer what exactly happened here...but one thing you can be sure of... if something happened to a passenger carrying their own suitcase, which they themselves packed, would not generate any liability on the part of the airline.

At some airports passengers have to check their luggage with the airline, then bring their bags to TSA for baggage screening since the screening is done in the lobby prior to passing through security rather than in a baggage make-up area unseen by passengers. I suspect this is the case in JetBlue's JFK terminal.

So it's ok for the employee to hurt their back, but not you, the person with the overpacked bag? They DO NOT get paid for that. Back injury is the leading cause of airline agent absenteeism.

Wink Really...?

Yes- in JFK the person who packed the luggage and is flying does indeed bring their bag to the belt. If you needed assistance I am sure you could have paid a curbside attendant to help you. I don't understand why you are so outraged by this? I agree that the agent at the counter must normally have a sore back - isn't the max limit 50lbs? Lets see ... 50lbs x 400 people a day = workers comp claims if you ask me.... a conveyor belt that you the customer must use instead sounds like a brilliant idea from the airline.
