Angry Miles expiry without reminder

I had 214,153 miles that expired on 20-Jan-2023 without any e-mail reminders about the upcoming expiry date. The last reminder was in May 2020 and most of this 3-year period was also when travel was limited due to COVID. Now the customer rep is pointing to the option to pay $3,213 to reinstate these miles!I would like to have the miles reinstated without having to pay any $ as a one-time exception, since there was no warning e-mail about the expiry. I can then generate activity on my account to prevent the expiry, now that I am aware of this fine print clause. As of now, this seems like a way to cheat members out of the miles they had earned / accrued.
