OK, I should be smarter. I travel with my wife and want at least one of us on the aisle. I called to insure an aisle seat on AA #65 Zurich to JFK. They said I must pay $30. I did. Later I was where I could to access a seating chart online. The seating is 2-3-2 on that plane. They did tell me they would seat the two of us together, therefore one of us HAD to have an aisle seat.
I got back to the agents I dealt with to be told I must go to website refunds.aa.com. Well, at least from here, I must enter
www.refunds.aa.com. Anyway, I tried that and the phone method. Got the complete run around by machines (even on the phone). AA won that one. If they sell you an upgrade/seat selection of any kind beware. It may be something you already have or otherwise do not need. They won't tell you until you confront them. Then they will make the refund process difficult enough that you give up if it is not a huge amount (who knows, with perseverance and a number of hours - I only used one - I might have gotten that refund.
BTW, I did try to file a complaint on their site with them. I went through all the steps, wrote out a complaint, pushed "continue" and got an error. I corrected the indicated error, but then I got an error anyway with nothing indicated as wrong. I guess they really did not want to see my complaint.
