Spirit Airlines Fare Club
A year ago i signed up to be a part of the Spirit Airlines $9 Fare Club, which in turn after all of their extra charges turns into the same price as US Air or Delta!
I asked to have my membership cancelled yet they still charged me $59.95 and will NOT refund me! Anyone else having such an issue with them? I plan on fighting this until the end!!! |

Did you cancel in writing before the expiration date?

$9 Fare Club Automatic Renewal is unfair
I had joined Spirit Airlines "$9 Fare Club" in 2011 while purchasing an airline ticket. Since it was cheaper to join the club than pay the full price of the ticket, I signed up. I had no idea that it would automatically renew every year and that my credit card would automatically be charged $59.95. When I received my credit card statement I noticed the charge for $59.95 on 2/25/12 from Spirit Airlines. I immediately called the airline to dispute it and ask that they cancel my membership and refund my fee. They refused stating that it was in section 3 of the terms and conditions in joining the program. I asked why they never sent an email or letter indicating that the program would automatically renew on a particular annual date. Furthermore, that if I needed to cancel I should be allowed to do so before they charge me. Their continued response was it was in the terms and conditions. My issue is that it is extremely rare to fully read the lengthy terms and conditions on-line since they are often multiple pages of legal jargon with tricks such as this auto renewal built in to the wording. My main dispute is that there should be an opportunity to cancel a reoccurring membership and get a refund since without any notice, you have no idea when it will renew. Had Spirit Airlines informed me through email or regular mail that my membership was set to renew, I would have had ample time to assess whether or not I wished to stay in the program or voluntarily withdraw from it if I no longer used the service. I find this to be an unfair business practice from Spirit Airlines since they are hiding behind a section that they know consumers won't read. If they wanted consumers to fully understand that they are being charged annually, it should be made more apparent and obvious on the page and not buried in the terms and conditions section. They don't give you any flexibility in cancelling or receiving a refund. I truly believe that what they are doing is wrong, improper and self-serving since they are banking on the fact that consumers such as myself will unknowingly be trapped into a program that takes your money on an annual basis without the courtesy or advance notification that the consumer is about to be charged. Consumers deserve the right to say "no" before a charge is applied and not after the fact. Most importantly, they should never be charged for a service without any given notice.

Unfortunately, they are like typical scammers. They know most people will not read the T&C's. I think you have no chance of getting your money back this year, but make sure you cancel before renewal, at least six weeks in advance next year. Do not just tell your credit card company. This is not the same as a direct debt from your bank account, it has to be cancelled by Spirit...they have a permanant authority to raid your account!

Spirit Air's NONACCESSIBLE $9 Fare Club is a FRAUD....
I too joined Spirit Air's $9 Fare Club. January 1, 2012 (it's on my calendar, NOT to renew, BTW, thanks to the posts here warning me about automatic "renewals" being charged to the abused. In January, I received the Fare Club price (a big-whoop ten bucks off their normal fare, each way). So far, so good. In July and August, I tried online and via phone to actually BOOK the Fare Club prices. It's impossible! I tried using different browsers, different computers (at work, home, on a laptop, at a public library) but every time I log in Spirit DOES NOT recognize that I am already a Fare Club Member ($59.95 was additionally charged to my card on 1-1-2012 over and above their posted Fare Club rate). Now it won't work, every time since that I have tried. I am only able to book the ten-dollar HIGHER, non-Fare Club rate. Each time I fired off an email to Spirit, I never received a response. I even tried calling their local corporate phone numbers but both I tried, the mailboxes were full. Customer no-service in Asia was absolutely no help, as expected....and online there is NO recourse.
Is this an isolated incident or are there other potential class-action participants who were defrauded by not even being able to USE their $9 Fare Club membership? $59.95 recurring fee, and not getting ANYTHING in return (other than my twenty dollar "discount" initially). False pretenses, with no recourse....among the countless other complaints of this horrendous disaster of a (mis)operation.... |

Spirits phony $9 fare club
After a year of membership, I canceled (hopefully I'm not charged anyway) because I have yet to be able to even find a $9 fare since my initial purchase. Upon signing up, I was under the impression that I would receive emails advertising these fares on a regular basis. When searching flights, I have not seen a "$9 fare club" rate for under $29. I do wonder if anyone ever flies spirit more than once.
