Charged in foreign currency
I travel Asia extensively and have never encountered this situation before.
I recently purchased a ticket from Bangkok to the UK with Etihad .I was in the UK when I booked it and I was quoted a price in GBP but when I received my credit card statement I had been charged in Thai baht which meant I was given a terrible exchange rate and transfer charges. This added an extra £50 to the ticket. I have booked this route many times in the past with different airlines(Eva, Malaysia, Jet, Emirates and a couple more)and have never been charged in baht. I contacted Etihad customer services and received the usual we have received your complaint blah, blah. After waiting a month I contacted Resolver to make an official complaint .Waited another two weeks with only a message saying my complaint has been passed on to another department. One week later Resolver escalated the case and I finally received this response You have requested to know why you have been charged in Baht for this reservation. I would like to clarify that our prices are automatically displayed based on the origin you are flying from. Your payment provider may apply different exchange rates to the fare displayed on the booking page. Therefore, there may be additional charges incurred, which Etihad Airways is not liable for. The payment options provided will differ for each origin. In your particular case, since your journey originates from Bangkok the fare shown and charged was in Thai Baht. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to address your concerns. Has anyone else encountered this as I said I have never before |
