Refund not given
I was flying to Dhaka on July 8 from Dallas through Toronto. At the airport, I was told that I need Canadian visa to transit through Canada. I called the customer service of Turkish Airlines and was told that I could go to Houston Airport Turkish ticketing office, where they could change my route to avoid this issue. They said change fee would be ~200 USD. However, when I reached there the sales person at said I would have to pay around 1800 USD to make the changes and, she also said that if I do so my return ticket will remain unchanged. I made a complaint regarding the excess amount I had to pay to Turkish Airlines and received a refund and I thought the issue was resolved.
However, on August 14, when I went to Dhaka Airport I was informed that the itinerary of my return flight was changed. Instead of my flight being on August 17 from Istanbul to Chicago it was changed to August 14. This meant that I could not enjoy my vacation with my family in Istanbul as planned. I never requested any change to my return ticket and was not notified of any changes.
When I explained the issue to the Turkish Airlines official in Bangladesh, they said they were unable to help from Dhaka and that it can be resolved from Istanbul as that is the hub for Turkish Airlines. When I talked to the ticketing personnel at Istanbul Airport to change my ticket they said all the flights to US are booked until 20 August. Then, I talked to the supervisor of Turkish Airlines at the departure terminal and he suggested to buy ticket from outside agent at the airport because he felt it was a mistake by the Turkish Airlines official at Houston and I would get a refund on it. I could not find any ticket through Chicago to Dallas on August 17 and had to buy a ticket through San Francisco to Phoenix. The ticket cost me 1774.65 USD with an additional international transaction fee of 53.23 USD. On Aug 17, I saw a ticket was available on Turkish Airlines website for flight through Chicago to Dallas. So, I decided to change my ticket to my original route of Dallas through Chicago as this would allow me to fly with my family. For this change I was charged 758.07 USD and an international transaction fee of 22.11 USD.
I have complained to Turkish Airlines several times on this issue. They have admitted it was Turkish Airline Houston Sales Office’s mistake and issued 1255 EUR (1465 USD) refund. This is still 1143 USD short of what I had to pay due to negligence on part of Turkish Airlines. Thereafter, I have repeatedly asked Turkish Airlines for the refund of the remaining amount, but they are not willing to provide it. That is why, I have turned to DOT to solve this issue. It has been more than a month since this incident has taken place and I have still not received my dues from the airlines. Me and my husband are only university students and we need the remaining 1143 USD to cover our living expenses.
