Default DL744 25 June 2007 cancellation

On 25 June 2007 our family was flying on DL774 from Atlanta to Jacksonville. The flight started to accelerate down the runway and the takeoff was aborted. It was explained repeatedly that this was due to a mechanical problem, and that delta could not find an alternate aircraft. Our family was stranded in Atlanta, and had a flight to catch on another airline the next morning. We drove a rental car 6 hrs one way to Jacksonville. We simply asked Delta to cover the rental car and gas costs since this was clearly due to mechanical problems. Their response was that the flight was cancelled due to weather. It was clearly not weather as the details attached explain. After providing the details and faxing the receipts as asked, Delta's response was simple, no. They would not cover the costs. We paid for round trip tickets, and didn't get them. They offered no details and no compensation at all. Do we have any rights in this case? Is there anyone else reading this that was also left stranded on DL744 on 25 June 2007?
