Miles inactivity expiration term is too short. My miles just expired at the end of 2008. I did not receive any notification about approaching expiration date; otherwise I would react and open SkyMiles Credit Card or so.
Customer service reps were no help and did not reinstated miles or offered other solution. (“Your account is closed. Open a new account” – What for???!!!). Definitely they were not interested in returning a customer.
I prefer other airlines to Delta.

Delta's is actually longer than most @ 2 years. Many are 18 months. Only a couple are longer.

The expiration date would be on your SkyMiles account accessible @ Delta.com:

Have you kept the e-mail address in your profile current? DL sends out an e-mail notice to accounts which are about to expire. What did you expect? A personal phone call?

The term "Frequent Flier Program" clearly implies that it is most beneficial to frequent fliers. You haven't flown Delta for at least 2 years. Do you still consider yourself a "frequent flier" on Delta? Perhaps Delta might be happy with your very infrequent ticket purchases but the cost of maintaining a Skymiles account between such long periods of inactivity isn't worth it to them. That's their business decision and you can agree or disagree with it.

I guess you've already answered your own question.
