Flight 3172 Cancelled - Passengers stuck overnight
On May 29,2012, Flight 3172 from Philadelphia to Detroit we were on the tarmac in Philly for about 1 hour waiting for a weather system to pass. Then the flight was cancelled and we had to accept flights the next day.
The storm system was gone pretty quickly. They could have delayed the flight instead of cancelling it. Instead we passengers were left to fend for ourselves and spend the night at the airport - or at a hotel at our own expense - and wait for a flight the next day. Understandably they cannot be responsible for the weather. They are responsible, however, for the way they handle weather issues. Why didn't they wait it out for a couple hours? The customer service agents at the airport were no help. They just stated that it was the policy of the airline. Since they mishandled the weather issue, I wanted them to pay for my accommodations for the night. I would have willingly overlooked the way they cost me 1 day of my trip had they only done the right thing and taken care of my accommodations to make up for it. Instead they refused. After all, everybody makes mistakes. But to make a mistake and defend your mistake at the expense of other people is despicable. I've flown America West and US Airways for years. Their attitude toward their customers has sunk to a deplorable level. I will be through with them as soon as I use up my frequent flyer miles. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. |

Under a weather hold, they are under the direct orders of ATC (Air Traffic Control). If ATC doesn't give the clearance to go, they can't go. An airline doesn't stay in business staying on the ground. It is also likely (this being the last flight of the day) that crew would have "timed out" on hours (also a federal rule) before the flight would have reached it's destination.
Perhaps if passengers didn't act like spoiled children throwing a tantrum when life (or mother nature) throws them a curve ball, flying would be a far more enjoyable experience for everyone. |

You don't have all the facts
It was not the last flight of the day.
The storm was over quickly. Obviously it was more profitable for US Airways to cancel the flight and stuff the victims on other flights over the next 24 hours than it would have been to delay the flight after the storm. Your demeaning remark about tantrums was uncalled for. |
