Thumbs down Flight Delayed Over 7 Hours!

My boyfriend of a two year long distance relationship was coming to FL from CT for a third time visit. He usually uses Southwest Airlines but he didn't have to money and had to use Continental. His flight was supposed to leave at 1:15pm and then there would be a stop in Newark at 3:00 and he would leave to FL at 4:45 and get here by 7:45. Well, he ended up having to change his flight and he left CT at 6:00pm was in Newark for another hour, and got to Florida at 11:00pm. The thing is that the stop in Newark was a different flight and if he hadn't changed his flight {which they didn't tell him to do} he would've missed his Newark flight here. An extremely irresponsible airline. He's never flying with them again.

im not quite understanding. Why did he change his flight? was it at his request or did the airline cancel his orignal flight, and why the airline cancelled? usually the agent (if they rebooked him) they would know that he would have to change his second leg, and i have used the kiosk where it has also given me the option to change the second leg

I'm not sure I'm understanding your math here. The original itinerary had him arriving in FL @7:45 PM. His new itinerary, which according to you was his change and not the airline, got him to FL @11:00PM. That is 3 hours and 15 minutes later, not over 7 hours.
