Default Ticket Changes

I purchased tickets from San Francisco to Santiago on August 26, 2018. For personal reasons I didn't want to divulge to AA I tried to use the tickets for a trip we would like to take September 26, 2019. I contacted Customer Service to see if they would allow us an extra month to use the tickets instead of holding us to the standard one year. They refused saying that THEY feel "a year is a fair amount of time" for us to use the tickets that we paid for. How can they assume they know what is fair to their customers and should I have to give them personal details to get them to be more flexible? We are only asking for ONE extra month to use the tickets.
