Flying into and out of NY airspace is horrible because the corridors for that part of the country overlap each other. At some point in the day your aircraft will have toucheddown or taken off from the NY airspace area.
As far as Maintaince delays think of it this way: Like your car, an airplane is a man made object with a higher price tag and more complex set of computers in the flight deck controling various parts of the aircraft. If just 1 little fault is dected, it can ground a plane of an indefinite period of time until the issue is fixed. Now there are some parts that can be placed on what is called "M.E.L." or Min. Equip. List which means that it will not affect the aircraft, but the mechanics still have to call maintaince control to let them know what is going on and to get a control number so that when the M.E.L. comes up for fixing, they can get right on it.
