On a recent flight from San Francisco to Washington, a 5 hour flight, there was no in-flight diversions such as movies, and no food. Not even stale peanuts. There were free soft drinks. To make matters worse, the flight attendants set the cabin temperature very low, no doubt because they were working in jackets while the passengers were strapped into seats. It was freezing. No blankets available. No pillows. Repeated requests to turn the heat up were ignored until the last half hour of the flight. Cabin attendants were aged, surly, and cynical. Clearly they were there to get the pay, not to do the job. Flights on foreign carriers are far more civilized. If you have a choice, avoid United like the plague.
