Our family flew to Taiwan on June 29,2009 using Malaysia airlines. My wife and I returned to US on July 18 and my two daughters return on August 1. My daughters are 14 and 11 when they fly and we purchased a child ticket for the younger daughter. Not only the airline want us to upgrade the child ticket to adult ticket, they charge about $100 for fee. We paid the fee since we don't want them to strand in the airport. But the policy of the airline is like holding the customer hostage because we have no choice but to pay the upgrade and the fee.

First, a lot of airlines only offer a reduced, or free, fare if the child is less than 2 years of age. Whether the discount is for being less than 2, or an older age, the child must be less than the required age on the day of ALL flights, not just on the day the ticket was purchased. To provide another example: If the child's birthday occurred between the outbound and return flights you would owe an adult fare for both the outbound and return.

The fare increase is because the child is not accompanied by an adult, not because she will be 12 years old on the day of her return flight. Her birthday is February. In other airlines, as long as a child is accompanied by someone that is 12 years old, the child pays only the child's fare. In this case, she is accompanied by my older kid, who is 14 years old.
However, Malaysia airlines requires the child to be accompanied by someone that is 15 years old for the child to be eligible for child fare. That might be some fine print that we didn't read so we have to accept that. But the airlines requires us to make up the difference for BOTH ways and also requires us to pay a $100 processing fee. Otherwise, the airlines won't allow the kid to get on the airplane. I don't know what kind of service my kid will receive to warrant the extra fare we have to pay.

I checked Malaysia's website. (The airline, not the country.) The ages a child must travel as an unaccompanied minor are 5-15. Both of your children are below this age so must travel as unaccompanied minors so additional fees will apply.

it means that you will have to pay the unaccompanied minor fee, in your case both ways since it seems like there is noone above 15, and the fee may have been for the unaccompanied minor and change fees
i have flown malaysian airlines a bunch of times as i used to live in singapore and i travel there still frequently (even though i mainly use singapore airlines) and there seems to be a charge for almost all airlines, and at least now you wont have to worry about your children catching the wrong flight or have someone who doesnt check up on them during the flight.......i hear that with american based airlines they basically escort them to the plane and then they are on their own it seems....with the good asian airlines (singapore, malaysian, cathay pacific...etc) they always have a smile on their face and are extremely helpful, caring and they check up to make sure your ok during the flight

Sorry to inform you that wedding gown is not allowed to be hanged at the first class closet.
You may carry your wedding gown on board but it must be within dimension of the cabin baggage (22in x 12in x 7in), one piece only and not more than 5 kgs. If it’s exceeding the above prescribed dimension and weight so it must be checked as check-in baggage.
Regards.

I've always understood wedding gowns as being treasured items which, after their use, become keepsakes. So why would you want to risk damage to it by carrying it aboard an airplane?? Even in first class ("FC") you don't get an exclusive right to a closet. In theory it must be shared with all other FC passengers.
If you haven't already left on your trip: Get your gown boxed-up in a crush-proof, watertight box. Then have it shipped to your destination. Make sure the shipping company (DHL, UPS, Fedex) offers a "tracking service." Yes, it will cost a lot. But, it's your wedding. Besides, you may arrived "ruffled," but your gown won't!
Lastly, you DO have a first class ticket, I hope.
