As you said it might be worth a try, however I believe that if your ticket wasn't issued in Singapore or on United's Singapore website (.sg) in Singapore dollars there's probably little they can do. A friend and I were traveling in Europe and bought tickets on KLM to fly from Rome to Dublin. Our plans changed and we flew from Barcelona to Dublin instead but our tickets (issued on KLM.com.it) were refundable. At the BCN airport I gave a copy of out ticket information to the agent there but even she couldn't initiate a refund. Even though the ticket was paid in Euros and she was a KLM agent I had to call the KLM office in Rome since the ticket was issued there.
