Next time, limit what you take on, especially an electric grill. With security heightened as it is, I'm not surprised by their reaction. You should have simply checked it in and saved yourself the hassle. I agree with Cazz the attitude was unnecessary, then again I am told that Australians have a thing against foreigners, so that is something to be wary of if you ever take that route in the future.
